From Caller Tunes to Artificial Intelligence: A Decade of Tech Evolution

A decade ago, before smartphones and artificial intelligence became part of everyday life, we used to go to shops to recharge our mobiles and visit browsing centres for printouts or to check emails.

Back then, 500 MB of mobile data felt like a surplus. We hardly had much to do on our phones other than downloading caller tunes or games.

Most of us started learning to use computers only after 6th grade, and even then it was mostly for games and MS Paint.

With technological advancement, mobiles evolved from keypads to semi-touch phones and then to full touchscreen smartphones.

Along with that, we evolved too — from learning how to recharge online to surfing the internet and purchasing things online.

As the internet became an integral part of our lives, the telecom industry changed as well. Mobile data recharge became mandatory, along with unlimited call offers. Slowly, STD and ISD booths disappeared, and landlines became less common, mostly limited to banks, hospitals, and a few institutions.

With the arrival of broadband networks, many service-based apps were introduced. Convenience slowly became a necessity, and necessities became easily accessible — sometimes at a higher cost.

While technology advanced, some people lost their businesses while others saw opportunities. Many learned new skills and adapted to the changing world.

However, there are risks that come with it — job insecurity, Difficulty to adapt new skill requirements, health issues caused by excessive convenience, and mental health problems caused by phone addiction and toxic online behaviour.

Sometimes comment sections turn into spaces where people project their frustrations onto strangers, leading to unnecessary criticism and hostility.

One of the biggest concerns today is rise of privacy issues and online scams, which have become almost inevitable.

People have learned to live with these risks, balancing convenience with caution.

Despite these challenges, many people choose to focus on the good side of technology.

At the same time, we must be careful because too much dependence on technology can make us lazier and affect our thinking ability.

So, we need to remind ourselves to take the good from these advancements rather than focusing only on the negatives.

Even though many things can be automated today, they still require human oversight. Technology does not have ethical thinking or the ability to fully understand human behaviour without human intelligence.

So, if you are worried about job security because of Artificial Intelligence, don’t be. AI still needs human supervision. What we really need to do is adapt and strategize our careers.

You can start by learning tools like Power BI, Power Automate, and understanding how generative AI works.

Think about how you can use these technologies for your benefit rather than fearing them.

Which is exactly what I have been doing ever since these AI tools were introduced. I use those tools to check the flow of my blog. Although I write the entire blog myself, sometimes it feels like something is missing.

In those cases, I use AI to identify what I might be missing from a reader’s point of view, understand how my blog can reach a wider audience, and improve SEO and the overall blog page layout.

Most importantly, I talk about things that are often hard to debate or process with people. I use it like a therapist — a kind of safe space to reflect on things I go through and decide for myself.

Whether we like it or not, change is constant — so our determination to adapt should also be constant.
